After lots of practice and once blending is efficient and many words are now known, ask a
child to read aloud the red arrow row of words, another child to read the green arrow row of
words etc.
Once the first 6 letter sounds are known and well-practiced in blending words, move onto
sounds 7 to 12 of the letter-sound code and work on the green word bank on the Blending
Bricks 2 mat.
Continue in the same manner until all 42 letter sounds are known and practised in the 168
words on the Blending Bricks mats - set 1 to set 7.
The letter-sound mat and the Blending Bricks mats are superb resources to provide reams
of regular, snappy reading sessions across the school day. This will drive and embed
letter-sound knowledge association. Blending words will build reading skills in an efficient,
structured and effective way.
We now practice coding three letter words, CVCs.
For this activity, we will use just three bricks: Green, red and orange. You might have a chart
on the wall showing just 3 bricks in the sequence of green first, red second and orange
third. Very quickly, the children remember the colour sequence.
When the teacher says a word, the children will place the green brick on the first sound, the
red brick on the second sound and the orange brick on the third sound e.g. sat is coded
using green on s, red on a and orange on t. Teacher writes sat on the whiteboard.
Ask the children to mark the 3 sounds in nap i.e. green on n, red on a and orange on p.
Correct by writing the word up on the whiteboard in sequence and saying: “n a p - had you
placed a green brick on n, the red brick on a and the orange brick on p.
Code lots of other words using a brick colour sequence, along with the first 6 sounds.
These are just some of the many ways that you can use your Six Bricks and letter-sound
mat to practice and embed letter-sound/code knowledge.
