Let us look at an example for Brick Multiplication Tables 1-6. We will use 1A
table 1A as a simple example that demonstrates how the activity mat
works. It is the same method for all 96 sets of tables. 6x1=

          • 6 x 1 = 6, 6 is green, place the green brick at the top of the rocket 12x1=
          • 12 x 1 = 12, 12 is red, place the red brick next into the rocket 10x1=
          • 10 x 1 = 10, 10 is light blue, place the light blue brick next into the
             rocket 2x1=
          • 2 x 1 = 2, 2 is orange, place the orange brick next into the rocket
          • 8 x 1 = 8, 8 is yellow, place the yellow brick next into the rocket 8x1=
          • 4 x 1 = 4, 4 is dark blue, finally, place the dark blue brick into the bottom

             of the rocket. 4x1=

That is the answer code completed. 12 8 4

                                                                                                          6 2 10
When it comes to correction, there are two options:

          1. The teacher can correct the set of table facts using the interactive whiteboard software
or the master code answer sheet.
          2. Children can correct their own mats by comparing their answer brick sequence to the

             master answer code sheet.

We can see that they are all correct because
the brick sequence in the rocket matches the
                                                                answer code sequence.

There are 96 sets of 6 table facts which
together cover every table fact up to 12 across
                                                                addition, subtraction, multiplication and

                                                                division.

This is an ideal whole-class activity where
each student has an activity mat and a set of 6
bricks, with the teacher using the IWB software
to correct, at the top of the room. This approach

ensures that ALL children are active, practising and exercising their recall of tables facts.

The activity mats and master answer mats would also make for an excellent Maths Station
activity. Children can test themselves on sets of facts and self-correct using the Master
Answer Sheet. This is very empowering for them, to be able to self-test and self-correct.

The mats and software together will certainly provide the active practise that children need
to embed table fact knowledge, as accurate and speedy recall of table facts underpins so
          much later success in mathematics.
