‘Tricky words’ are sometimes called ‘key words’. Tricky words are tricky because they are
phonetically irregular. They must be learned and automatically recalled by children when
reading. They do not conform to being sounded out.
Children will need to know their tricky words to read and write most sentences. Tricky
words are also high frequency words and early readers can find them difficult to read as
they have not yet learned some of the phoneme / graphemes in those words or they may
contain an alternative spelling that has not yet been taught.
The Tricky Words Bricks mats provide the forum in which children can learn, practice and
recall their tricky words. There are 4 tricky word mats with 18 words to practice on each,
giving a total of 72 high frequency tricky words to learn.
Coloured arrows are used to direct children’s attention to specific rows of words that are
being worked on.
Instructions
For example, we are working on the green arrow, row 1. Begin calling: “Can you place a
green brick on she?” Children place a green brick on that word. “Place an orange brick on I,
place a red brick on me, place a light blue brick on he, place a dark blue brick on the, place a
yellow brick on we.”
