These Blending Bricks mats contain 7 groups of 24 words that can be decoded and read
using letter/sound knowledge e.g. the first 24 red words can be decoded and read using the
first 6 sounds: s, a, t, i, p and n.
The second group of green words require knowledge of the first 12 letter sounds, the
orange words require knowledge of the first 18 letter sounds, the dark blue words require
knowledge of the first 24 letter sounds, the brown words require knowledge of the first 30
letter sounds, the light blue words require knowledge of the first 36 letter sounds and the
black words require all 42 letter sounds to be completed.
Once the first 6 sounds are known, the children can move to the Blending Bricks 1 board.
Here there are 24 red words that can be decoded and read by using their letter-sound code
knowledge of s,a,t,i,p and n. Blending Bricks 2, 3 and 4 contain the other word banks.
Instructions
Children are taught to read by blending letter sounds together to form words, so that /p-i-n/
becomes pin. Children need lots of blending practice when learning to read. The Blending
Bricks boards provide this structured and controlled practice. The banks of words use only
the letter sounds that have been taught.
You will find that after blending words a few times, those words will become known and
children will automatically say and mark them with a brick. Once a word is known and
automatically recalled, there is no need to sound-it-out.
For example, teacher says: “Place a yellow brick on sat,” with the teacher blending and
orally emphasising the sounds that comprise the word they are looking for i.e. /s-a-t/.
Children brick sat. Correct using the IWB software tool.
Another example, teacher says: “Place a red brick on it,” blending and orally emphasising
the sounds that comprise the word they are looking for i.e. /i-t/. Look at where children
have placed bricks on their own mats. Correct using the IWB software.
The teacher continues calling words and using the Six Bricks interactive whiteboard tool or
their whiteboard to show the correct answers.
Tip: The teacher might begin by directing them to the row where the next word will be e.g.
in Blending Bricks 1 “It is a red word, in the green arrow row. Can everyone place a green
brick on ant,” blending and orally emphasising the sounds that comprise the word they are
looking for i.e. /a-n-t/.
Role reversal suggestion
Let children do the calling and marking.
