To become readers, children must learn and apply the letter-sound code. Children will learn
to associate the letters (graphemes) with corresponding sounds (phonemes). Once they
are fluid on recalling their letter / sound correspondences, they are ready to begin blending,
decoding words in reading and encoding words in writing.
Six Bricks can be used effectively as part of the auditory, visual, kinesthetic approach to
learning the letter-sound code. We call it the ‘hear-see-do’ approach. The ‘doing’ allows the
teacher to know what the child is thinking, once he/she places the brick on a letter sound or
word.
The Letter Sound Bricks mat contains 42 letter sounds, divided into 7 groups, with 6 sounds
in each group. The arrows on the side of the mat allow you to quickly direct children’s
attention to any specific group of sounds e.g. can everyone look at the dark blue arrow row
of g,o,u,l,f,b?
The Letter Sounds Bricks mat, as you see here, is used in tandem with the school phonics
programme. Teachers can create their own letter-sound sequence activity mats if a more
perfect alignment is required for the letter/sound introductions.
