• How many light blue bricks are in the box? Mark the number on the number line.
          • How many red and yellow bricks are in this box? Mark the number on the number line.
          • How many green and orange bricks are in this box? Mark the number on the number line.
          • How many red and dark blue bricks are in the box? Mark the number on the number line.
          • How many green and orange bricks are in the box? Mark the number on the number line.
          • Place bricks on the boxes that have more than 5 bricks in them
          • Place bricks on the boxes that have less than 4 bricks in them
          • What two groups together make 5?
          • On the top row, if I combine the yellow, orange and bright blue bricks, how many bricks
will I have altogether? Show me that number on the number line.
          • If I put all the bricks in the two boxes together, how many bricks would I have? Place a

brick on the number line to show how many.
          • There are 6 dark blue bricks in the box. If I took 2 away, how many would be left? Place a
brick on the number line to show how many.

          Other activities
          • Sing some number rhymes together. Let the bricks represent the objects in the songs
e.g. bottles, teddies in bed or ducks. As the children sing the songs, let them manipulate
the objects e.g. line up 10 bricks standing upright on a brick wall. As the song is sung,
children knock off one bottle each time. In this way, they see 10 reduce to zero, one by

             one.
◊ 10 Green bottles hanging on the wall
◊ There were 6 in the bed and the little one said…….
◊ Five little ducks went out one day ……
          • Extension ideas
◊ Use the number line 1 to 10 and bricks to solve addition problems e.g. 4+3. The
children insert 4 red bricks and 3 green bricks and record their answer as 7.
◊ Repeat for addition using two sets or 3 sets up to 10 e.g. 2 red, 3 yellow, 1 green

As you can see from the quick range of activities that we stepped through here, the
Counting Bricks activity mat, together with the bricks and IWB software, can help children to
quickly explore, build and come to understand a range of number concepts and skills up to

          10.
