The items A to J can represent anything e.g. bars of chocolate, bags of sweets etc.

For now, let’s pretend that we have 10 Birthday Cakes A to J. By using hands-on
materials, we are utilising the proven concrete/pictorial/abstract approach to high quality
          mathematics teaching.

          Each cake represents a whole cake i.e. 1.0 or 1/1 or 100%.

The studs on the bricks can represent candles on the cake e.g. cake A would have 8
candles and cake J has 80 candles. The cakes mark birthday milestones of 8 years, 16
years, 24……… 80 years. What age does Cake G represent? How do you know? What age
does Cake I represent? How do you know?

Using the 10 Birthday Cakes, we can systematically explore, teach and build concept

understandings in relation to fractions, decimals and percentages.

          Exploring Cake D only
Place 4 bricks on Cake D. The cake is now divided into 4 equal parts. Each brick slice
represents 1 out of 4 equal parts of the cake or 1/4.

2 bricks represent 2/4 of the whole cake or 2/4 is the same as 1/2. The full cake is 4/4 or 1.
